to be more organized...
Sound simple? All I can seem to think about lately is all the different organizational projects that I want to work on and get done. So I've decided to make this seem a little simpler and call 2009 my year to get organized.
I'm talking big time organized here... I want everything under this roof to have a home and to live in it's home most of the time. To prep myself for this I've been reading How to Organize Just About Everything.
It's written by Peter Walsh, the infamous host of the Clean Sweep show on TLC. He's the one that comes in and throws away everyone's junk that they keep holding onto and makes them cry. Ya, that's the one. I highly recommend this book, there are so many great tips in there on how to get super organized.

Ya, that's the one. I highly recommend this book, there are so many great tips in there on how to get super organized. So to do this and hopefully make it successful I've come up with a few biggish projects that I want to get done over this next year.
1- Super organize my closets - We don't have a ton of storage space here so I'm trying to get a little creative with our closet space. We don't have a pantry in the kitchen so I'm planning on changing the hall closet into the pantry and have all of our linens and other supplies in our bathroom closet. This is going to take some work.
2- Organize our pictures into albums - I'm not a scrapbooker... and I don't really want to be. But I have a ton of pictures that are just sitting in a box that I would like that have more organized and readily available. The main books that I want to get done this year are our wedding, high school, Brighton Girls Camp, our time in Hawaii. I have some really great ideas on how I'm going to do this and I'm pretty excited about this one.
3- Get our 72 hour kits in order and at least a 6 month supply of food - I've already started on this one, but it's going to take more work. Obviously I'm going to need to work on #1 to get this one really going to have space to store our food.
4- Create an amazing filing system for all of the papers that I don't want to throw away - Man, I hate stacks of papers. I'm going to get in touch with my inner secretary and create a great filing system for all of our stuff.
I think that will keep me busy all year! I'm just really tired of not finding things that I need (like when the power goes out and I know we have three flashlights but I have not clue where they are!) I'm also tired of making dinner and thinking that I have something just to dig around the cupboards to find out that it's gone. I'm tired of the stacks of paper sitting around, it seems like no matter how many times a week I try to go through them they just never disappear!
I don't think that I'm an unorganized person for the most part... there is just lots of room for improvement here!

Sounds like we have the same organizational goals!!! I have A LOT of work to do.
I might have to check out the book. We have the same problem in our kitchen--no pantry. So we bought some put together yourself cabinets at Target and are using that to help out with short term food storage. We also have boxes of #10 cans (long term food storage) under our guest bed, but it drives me crazy that we don't have a better place for them. And I'm with you on the stacks of papers. They drive me crazy, too! If you come up with some great ideas about organization, make sure to post about it so we can all benefit! :) Happy New Year!
Can you believe I'm 25 and just purchased my first two drawer filing cabinet! Heavenly! My husband laughed when I went through every piece of paper in our home and through it out or filed it! Good luck! It's a great feeling!
You continue to be an inspiration for me. I love these goals - they sound most worthy of a new year's resolution!!
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou Lingard's!
I so wish that I was there to help you organize your house - you know how I just LOVE to do that stuff!!! Once you get it done you are going to love it so much more. I love to organize everything. I have a 4-drawer filing cabinet...I use the top 2 drawers for files of papers and stuff; and I use the 3rd drawer for my patterns, and the 4th drawer for other sewing things...something to think about :) Good luck...and keep me posted - this is something that I will love hearing about all year round!
Good Resolution! I may add that to my list as well.
That sounds like a great resolution Meg! Good luck with on it! Please share any tips you find work well!
I keep all my current papers in a file box with hanging files- when I don't use the file regularly anymore (like the rent receipts from the last place we lived) I go through it and just keep what I absolutely need in a bigger file box that's put away. Then I try to go through that one once a year and clean it out. I've also found the 'touch it only once' expression great for the mail- don't just put it down after you go through it- put it away!
Oh, I like this. Good for you. I need Mike to come to my house and tackle my closets. I know there is stuff I can do without but will cry it I am made to.
Great goals! I am currently trying to get all my pictures in albums as well. I finally got them organized by date (that took quite a few hours considering there were thousands of pictures) and now just need to get them in their albums. As for the filing system, I had a filing cabinet for years and years and it was so heavy and took up so much space. Finally, I just went to Walmart and bought a little handheld one with a handle that holds the same amount of stuff I had in the cabinet and I just keep it under my bed. Much easier.
