How I Met My Husband - Chapter One

Here is a little set up - So Trent and I met on a blind date. I was going to Snow College ( and 18 years old... barely) and my aunt saw him at a wedding and thought he was cute and I guess she thought of me... gave him my number. So my aunt called me and told me that she had given some guy my phone number and told him to call me when I was home for Christmas break. Okay, that is so random!!! He did call me when I was headed back to school after Christmas break and we talked on the phone for a few weeks. He seemed pretty nice. We decided to set up our first date to go to one of the concerts for the Olympics (this was when the Olympics were in Utah) mid February. Well, I guess I just sounded like the coolest girl in the world because he couldn't wait that long to meet me and set up another date in January.

He wanted me to get a group of girls together and he was going to get a group of guys together and he had heard of these cool hot springs in Spanish Fork Canyon that he wanted to hike up to. He told me that it would be a 20 minute walk and to bring our swimming suits. So I got a few girls together (two of them I didn't know at all, they were my friends roommates) and we drove up to meet these boys. We met at The Little Acorn, just outside of Spanish Fork Canyon and when I first saw Trent, I was a little disappointed..... He looked like some 14 year old punk kid!! Not kidding, he was skinny and tall, and had bleached blonde hair.. it looked like he was trying to look like Eminem or something. First impression, not good at all. So we followed them up to the canyon, COVERED in snow!!! It was scary, we were sliding on the road, and it took forever to get there, so by now it's like 10:00 PM!!! We finally get there, to find that it was absolutely freezing cold and pitch black, and us girls did not have enough warm clothes for this. The boys brought some extra gloves and stuff so that helped.

This 20 minute walk turned into an hour and a half HIKE!! It was a hard hike through packed down snow. It was so cold!! I love hiking and I just remember thinking "Get me out of here!! What is this!" We didn't even get to the hot springs until midnight. Once we were there it was pretty cool. Being surrounded by the freezing cold snow in this warm water with the full moon overhead. The only problem was that Trent was creeping me out a little. He kept rubbing my back and trying to hold my hand under the water. I was just not feeling it at all!!! I was a little mad that he had told me it was a short walk when it turned into this massive hike. Plus, I was just completely uncomfortable and feeling pretty bad. We were deep into the woods with five guys that we didn't know at all, in our bathing suits, at midnight. Nobody knew that we were there and that we were doing this. I was so worried that something would happen to one of my friends and it would be my fault for asking them to come.

We ended up playing spin the bottle in the water. It was pretty funny. I was the only girl that Trent ended up kissing, so I guess we kissed on the first date. But again it was HORRIBLE!!! He missed everytime, and it was so awkward. Sure it was pitch black (I don't think the moon had come up yet), but it was not a good kiss. I think that I ended up kissing one of his old mission companions too. I'm glad that I didn't end up kissing his brother Justin that was there (I think that you did though, Julie, didn't you??).

Anyway, we played in the water for a while and then it was time to get out and hike back. All the boys kept telling us to change out of our bathing suits because it was so cold they would freeze to our bodies. Well, the area that we had to change in was not very big, and I ended up standing by one of his friends, and he just dropped his drawers and started changing and I saw it all. I was mortified!! I did not want anyone to see me (remember, full moon... so there was some light) so I decided to not change out of my suit. BIG MISTAKE!! The hike back was even worse. By now it was 2 AM and we were so tired, and cold, and wet, and my suit froze to my body. I didn't think that the hike would ever end!!! To make matters worse Trent started telling Julie and I this long stupid joke that never ended (to try to pass the time) and it was just ridiculous!! The whole time I just wanted to hit myself in the head!!!

We FINALLY!!! Made it out of there, alive, awake, unfrostbitten... and said our goodbyes while we drove back to Ephraim. It was a CRAZY first date. Just nuts!!!

*** I'm surprised if anyone made it this far to read this part, if you did give yourself a pat on the back. Trent does not like it when I tell this story. He says that it makes me sound like a shallow, superficial person and he doesn't want people to think that I'm like that (because apparently he doesn't think that I am). But, that's how I remember it, that's how it was!!

Remember how we had already set up the second date (Olympic Concert) before we went on this first date?? Ya, I was not planning on ever seeing Trent again after that horrible date. But he "reminded me" that we would be going on a date to the concert, so I went. Wasn't a good date either.... I remember sitting there waiting for Trent to come and pick me up and thinking, "I would rather slam my foot in the door than go on this date tonight!!!"

I've already written too much. Maybe some other time I'll write about how I actually fell in love with my husband because it's a great story...

I'm a lucky girl that he didn't give up on me...

Oh my gosh! That brought back so many memories - some of which I had forgotten about. I remember my hair freezing and I was so afraid it was going to break off! I don't remember kissing anybody, but I kissed so many people in college, they all run together... j/k. You forgot to mention the part where every time we'd stop on the hike back, Trent would like lean on you or try to hug you and you were getting so annoyed. How hilarious! Thanks so much for posting this - I loved it!

Oh my goodness! I totally forgot about all this! I did remember you didn't like Trent when you first met him, nor the second date. I think I recall him smacking your butt! LOL!!! Why didn't I go to that hot pot deal? I can't remember if I wasn't invited, or if I couldn't for some prior obligation... Can't say I regret not having my swimsuit freeze to my body :)

Oh, by the way...I just stood behind your sister in line here at the Gateway McDonalds! I totally know it was her, but I am too big of a chicken to say anything!!

Miss your face tons! :)

I've learned to not trust Trent when he says it's just a walk or a stroll. It's likely a 3 hour hike that you need real boots and a water backpack or something. We did that with you in July with dry heat and then lightening surrounded by totally dry grass and then slick mud and Zach screaming all the way back. Almost as bad as your first date. Plus the hike up the mountain to the lighthouse in my swimming suit a couple weeks after surgery. Next time I take a walk with Trent I am planning on "Above and Beyond."
