Nuts...

I've been feeling very strongly for the past year or so that I need to start storing nuts for the winter.... or in other words, getting my food storage in order. This whole concept totally and completely overwhelms me. How do you really know how much food and water you really need. Where am I going to store it all? How will I be able to rotate it so that the food doesn't go bad.
I just keep thinking about how sad it would be to have my family hungry and in a bad circumstance with no food, and that is what pushes me to try this whole "storing nuts" thing out. So I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to do it so that it makes sense in my brain, but today the gathering starts...
Do any of you have any suggestions on what has worked for you?

I get overwhelmed by the thought of it as well...mostly where to store!
Personally, i just buy an "extra" when I go to the store....if I know i need 1 bag of flour, I buy 2. Or I buy a jar of peanut butter...and stuff it in the back of the pantry.
I know it'll take forever this way...but it's been working...I now have 6 bags of flour, 4 bags of sugar, 25 lbs of rice.....you get the idea....
Good luck!

We've just started storing extra food in the past couple months, and it is definitely overwhelming. All we've done so far is buy a few extra bulk items everytime we go to Costco. We try to get 3 or 4 things specifically for food storage. And we've bought lot of soy milk from Costco too because it doesn't need to be refridgerated. We still need to get a bunch of water jugs though.

I totally agree with what razakfamily said. I do the same thing...everytime I go to the grocery store/Costco I buy one case/item for my food storage. I try to buy items that will keep for a long time (peanut butter, canned soup, rice) and items that we will actually eat. If you buy items that you will use then you will avoid spoilage. Also, this is a good way to build a food storage in a cost-effective way if you don't have a lot of money to throw done all at once on food storage. You will be surprised as to how fast you can build a food supply by just buying "one extra" every time or every other time you shop.

We try to stock up on the usual staples like flour, sugar, soups when they are on sale at more of a bulk price like at case lot sales or Costco but we buy lots of cereal and granola bars and such when they are on sale cheap because we would be more likely to eat those in an emergency. This blog is pretty cool too, she has some great ideas of what to be storing: http://beehiveandbirdsnest.blogspot.com/

Looks like you have a lot of good suggestions! Another thing to think about might be a done deal like Perma-Pak. My dad used to sell that when the prophet first came out and said to get your two years worth. And the food isn't bad, I've eaten it. This is one place I am very lucky though! When my dad was doing the whole deal, he proactively bought two people worth of two years so that he could give it to me and my future husband as a wedding gift. I'm also lucky I have a crawl space to store it. Anywho, just a suggestion if it works for you.
