What's in a name???

I’ve seen a lot of blog posts about why they have chosen the name for their child, and thought this would be a good thing to remember.

Trent and I have talked about names for years and years, and have rarely agreed on a name. I like names that are very different, not common, and Trent likes names like: Gus, Sam, Joe, etc. So we had a tough time with finding a name that we liked.

I thought from the name battle we’ve had for years that it would be really hard to pick a name out for our son, but it was really pretty easy. I first heard the name Tru(e) when Meg Ryan adopted a little Chinese girl and named her “Daisy True”. I had never heard the name True used in a name before and I really liked that. I mentioned this to Trent when we were first pregnant and he said that there was a guy that worked at the egg farm with him named “Trumaine” and everyone called him Tru. He really liked that name. We kept that on the list, and when we found out that we were having a boy I immediately felt like we should name him Tru(e). I almost wish that I could say that it was some long lost family name, or that he’s named after some great hero….. but no. We just really liked the name and actually agreed on something.

I didn’t mention to Trent that I wanted to go ahead and name him Tru(e) because I was so afraid that he would have changed his mind and would say no. So we didn’t talk about a name for a few days after we found “it” to be a “him”. Then one night I started spouting off all these random names, “What about …..” and Trent said, “Lets just name him Tru(e).” That was that. We almost named him Trumaine and just would call him Tru, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Everyone I had ever heard of named Trumaine was a big, dark, football player (just google it and you’ll see what I mean) and I knew that my little boy would probably be skinny, lanky, and blonde. I just couldn’t do it. So we decided to name him Tru(e) and just before he was born we decided to spell it T-R-U.

His middle name is my maiden name. Long time family tradition from Trent’s family. He and all of his brothers have his mothers maiden name for their middle names. Those of you who know my maiden name (I’m not a big fan of sharing my “other names” on this blog, so if you don’t know it just pretend that you do. I’ll give you a clue, you may have heard this last name before…. mainly with a “M. Russell” attached to the front of it.) So if he doesn’t like his name he’s pretty much stuck with it, because the middle name is not one that you could decide to switch to a first name.

Anyway…. lots of words for a simple name. Everyday that passes he fits the name more and more.
True: real; genuine; authentic; sincere; not deceitful; firm in allegiance; loyal; faithful…
