On Saturday we took a little drive up to Pennsylvania. Oh it was gorgeous!! It reminded me of Hawaii, all of the lush green trees everywhere. Different, in that there was no ocean, but the same humid air and green surroundings, beautiful!
This was a little walk down memory lane for Trent (and Justin). They lived in Pennsylvania for a few years when they were kids. Some of Trent's first memories were from the time he lived there (I think they moved there when he was 4).
First we went to Longwood Gardens which is this beautiful garden of sorts, lots of unique trees, ponds, fountains, tree houses, you name it. Trent's mom used to take them here.
They even had a little kids play area with fun water features and plants.
Then we stopped off in Intercourse... for a looksy...
I wanted to buy some authentic Amish fabric to put in the quilt I'm making for our bed... and guess what. It wasn't authentic. They sell the same Moda fabric there that I can buy here. I bought some anyway (which I believe is still in the back of Sarah's car...), at least I could say that I got some in Amish country. You know, I was a little disappointed. When I went to Amish country as a kid it's wasn't some big tourist trap, it was a quaint little town with clothes hanging on the line and men plowing the fields. Now you can pay to ride in one of their buggies and they are walking around talking on cell phones. So much for the simple life huh?
Then we drove past the house that they lived in when they were kids. It was so cute. It's on a little side road tucked away behind the trees. I didn't get the best shot of the house because I didn't want the people that currently live there to think some nut case was stalking them, but I think it's fun to have a picture of it. They lived right down the street from a dairy that their mom would go to and get fresh milk for the family. The dairy is still there 25 years later.
It's beautiful there! I wish that I could live there. Maybe someday. We spent the night with Sarah's fun family and stayed up late playing Canasta and baking cookies while watching the fireflies outside.... dreamy.

That does sound inviting. Dale and I will have to go there someday with Jane.
When we were there in 1992, we went to Strausborg, PA - and maybe it's a little smaller and less touristy than Intercourse. The General Store we went to is fairly touristy though, but we drove through Lancaster County on our way there and it was very rural with the farms and laundry and no electric wires,
The movie Witness with Harrison Ford, has a scene filmed at the store we went to in 1992,
What a neat trip...it really makes me want to go back east! I'm making an Amish nine-patch quilt right now and in the information part of my book it says that the Amish put mistakes in their work on purpose to show humility because only God can create something perfect. Personally I don't think I need to add mistakes on purpose...in my case they will just happen naturally. I thought you might find that interesting (about adding mistakes on purpose).
You'd be amazed at what they do at Longwood for Christmas - Alisa and I were. (It was the first time I'd been there in my life, though.)
