I went to a little coupon seminar tonight and now I can't sleep because I keep thinking about it. My sister in laws are really into coupons and they find some really great deals. I was at one of their houses last weekend and she was showing me all of this stuff that she bought on sale and I felt really dumb...
Why do I feel like I'm not smart enough to figure out coupons???
That's really how I feel, maybe that's part of my problem. I am very hesitant about doing coupons because of these reasons...
1- Trent and I like to eat pretty fresh foods. We don't buy packaged foods I'd say.... 95% of the time. We like to make things from scratch... cake, waffles, mashed potatoes, we are really NOT into packaged foods. I feel like most of the time coupons are for packaged foods, that we are not going to eat anyway...
2- I get a little stressed trying to match up the coupon with the sale items... you know what I mean? I feel like the dots don't connect in my head with this. That's why I felt so dumb at my sister in laws house. I had looked through the same ads, went to the same stores... but I totally did not see the same items that she did for sale... I don't like feeling dumb, but man...
3- We are fairly brand specific.... mainly Trent. I'm willing to try whatever, but he has specific soap, deodorant, shampoo that he likes to use. So even though I might be willing to try something else, he may not be.
4- Yes, we are Costco shoppers.... I am willing to try something else out though, because you really can't buy everything you need at Costco without totally breaking the bank.
Okay, that's enough of a list for right now. With all the being said... I think that I am going to give coupons a try... I realized tonight that there are a lot of things that we can buy with coupons and at the grocery store like... diapers, dish soap, laundry soap, cleaners, toilet paper, you know... stuff like that.
The main reason why I'm going to try it out is because I'm not satisfied with how things are going now... how much money I'm spending now. I don't like running out of things and it would be nice to get a larger supply of everything going on around here.
I guess what it really boils down to is that how do you know that something isn't going to work for you if you never try it out? Our assumption is that we wont use the things that are in the coupon inserts... but how do we really know? We've never tried it... I'm willing to give it a try.
Way too much nonsense for all of you reading this... my head feels a bit better now though. I'll let you know how it goes...

I agree with you that it is hard to use coupons for fresh things - but for things like cleaning supplies, bathroom necessities, etc...they are WONDERFUL!!
Good luck - let us know how it goes :)
I have friends that coupon. I guess Wal Greens has amazing deals. But I always laugh at them when they go and buy 40 things of preparation H and take a picture and put it on their blogs. Ha!
That's something I need to get better at for sure! It just seems too time consuming for me to try and figure out all the loopholes......
I was in the middle of posting about MY coupon experience when I read yours! It totally seems overwhelming at first, and I felt the same exact way you do. But after talking to so many people about it, and seeing how many hundreds of dollars they save, well, its worth doing. I spent $150 on $300 worth of groceries the other day. Its worth the extra effort!
AMEN! I feel exactly the way you do with the whole coupon thing. Most of the time I think that I would spend more money by using coupons because I would end up buying items I didn't necessarily need or like...but I would buy things just because they are "on sale" or I have coupon to save me a bit. However, I haven't really tried it out so I can't knock it until I have tried it. Let me know how it goes.
i'm with you ... couponing just doesn't seem to be my thing. however, i seem to justify by saying i really don't have the liberty of comparison shopping ... it's tamuras or foodland. but really it's just that i don't want to spend the time looking at all the coupons.
Coupons are only wonderful if you can double them (which I haven't seen like I did in the 80's), you are buying something on sale so you get it for a really good price and if it is something you use or want to try. I used to cut out all the coupons in the Sunday paper and it was so time consuming to file them and then not use most of them. I have bought some things for next to nothing but it's not like that every week. There are some tricks to them and you the more you watch sales and have some coupons handy, the more you can save. I don't know how much I'm going to get back into it or not.
