Fitness Friday - Cardio Free Diet

I just finished reading this book and I’m not sure what I think about it yet. Basically he says that mindless cardio activity like running on the treadmill or doing the elliptical machine will not help you lose weight. That it’s all just a craze and that it ruins your body and just makes you hungrier after and you end up eating more calories than you burned (which I do believe in, just think about this…. is it easier to go on a 2 mile run, or not eat that donut???)

I’ve had a hard time deciding how I feel about this because when I started exercising to lose weight I started running. Honestly, it didn’t really make me lose weight. It did make me feel better mentally, cleared up my skin, gave me a low resting heart rate, etc. It wasn’t really until I started to eat a lot healthier and add in strength training that I started to tone up and lose weight. One thing about this author that bothered me is that he goes off on how women gain too much weight during pregnancy. That they should ONLY be gaining the allotted 25-30 lbs and that women are going way crazy and putting on 60-70 lbs and that they suddenly have no control over their themselves and that it makes him really mad to see that. All I have to say to that is Jim, I don’t think that you have EVER been pregnant so you have no room to talk. I know that I wasn’t sitting around eating candy bars all day to gain my 66 lbs. I did everything that I could aside from starve my growing baby to try not to gain that much weight, it just happened. Our bodies know what needs to happen I guess.

This book did make me think more about weight training. Trent says that I am soft now, I guess I wasn’t really soft before??? I’ve lost so much muscle tone since being pregnant and not weight training. I know that I need to pick this up again, but it seems like when I have time to exercise now days I hit the road for a run and strength training gets pushed to the side, or completely out of the picture. So I’m trying to do the weight training more for a few reasons. First is that I know that muscle burns calories just having more of it on your body. Also there is a history of osteoporosis in my family, my sweet grandma had it and that is something that I would like to avoid. But do I really think that I need to give up running to preserve my joints, health, and weight ultimately??

I guess you would have to read the book to really see what I’m talking about. I did make a purchase that showed up this week. My very own SPRI bandsto work out with at home. I started to use them yesterday and I’m feeling nice and sore today. So maybe right now for me, this is the answer. I can do this at home while Tru is sleeping or just hanging out on the floor.
Just on a side note…
Pounds lost: 56
Pounds to lose: 10

I’m down to the final 10, they say they are the hardest to get off. Wish me luck!!! (And just for the record, the best weight loss tool that I have found is breastfeeding hands down.)
