And yes, my dentist had those funny looking glasses on too...
Today I had the wonderful privilege of going to the dentist. I haven't been to a dentist in over three years... before that I'm not even sure!! The only reason I went three years ago was because my wisdom teeth were starting to grow in and I was pretty sure they needed to come out.
So today I buckled down and went, the result... not the best.
Not the worst, but not the best... a few small cavities (does six count as a few???) He said that when women are pregnant their teeth aren't as strong and are more prone to cavities. I'm talking last pregnancy since there is no current pregnancy. Sure we will blame it on that, and not on the 12,000 lbs of sugar I've eaten in the past three years!!!
Moving right along... when I asked the receptionist how much this was going to cost... I was soooo grateful to have dental insurance! Just a fraction of what it would cost without it. It made me think about how glad I am to have health and dental insurance right now. It's always a huge blessing when you have it.
The first two years that Trent and I were married we didn't have any health insurance. I'm grateful that we were reasonably healthy and we didn't have any major problems during that time. We were both working part time, so we couldn't get insurance through our work. We were also full time students and the school we were going to didn't have insurance. So we went without...
This was during the time that we both had the opportunity to look down the barrel of a gun with a crazed druggie on the other end. Afterwards we talked about it and the first thing that went through BOTH of our heads was, we didn't have health insurance!!! I hope that we really learned our lesson. I think that we did. I can't imagine how horrible it would have been to be a gun shot patient without any health insurance!!!!
This was a big reason why we decided to go to school in Hawaii, believe it or not. They MAKE you have health insurance to be a student there. Now, I'm sure those of you who are there right now on the student health plan are laughing at this... but really, it's better than nothing! We were able to see a doctor right there on campus and we actually went quite a bit so I'm glad that we had that coverage.
Tru was an expensive baby... I guess... I had a c-section plus I was in the hospital for five days. When the bill came in the mail I looked at the cost before insurance - over $16,000!!!! AHHH!!! I can't even imagine trying to pay for that without the help of insurance! I'm so glad that I didn't have to!
We are also big fans of secondary insurance over here. Do you not know what that is? Think of the AFLAC duck... they say that they help pay your bills when you are in the hospital... yes, it's TRUE!!!! We had this coverage when I had Tru and it was amazing! I highly recommend this for anyone who is planning on having a baby. If you are already pregnant... better luck next time, it's too late to sign up. If any of you want to know more about this just let me know... A life saver!!!
Anyway, this post is already too long... but I really am so thankful for health insurance. It will be interesting to see what happens with health insurance over the next four years. I just hope that we will always be able to have it, it's worth every penny!

I agree, I am sure thankful to have insurance!! And we enjoy having the hospitalization insurance, too how fun to make some extra money by having a baby!
You know, not many people think of insurance as something to be grateful for! Thank you for reminding me, especially. BTW, I hate the dentist...so I haven't gone in over 4 years!!! I am glad that you only had 6 small cavities :)
Coming from Canada I hated the fact that I had to pay for health coverage at BYU-H. Then I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks and when the bill came for something like $75,000 I was so glad that I only had to pay about $8000 of that!
Since returning to Canada I now totally appreciate free health care. I pay more taxes but I don't care!!!
Meg you are so cute. I was in a little bit of a rut when I got home today. I have decided to follow your example and do daily entries on things/people I am grateful for. Thank you for sharing.
it's funny when something REALLY horrible happens the first thing we think is I DONT HAVE INSURANCE! I do that ALL the time, like close calls in the car or potential life threatening situations..I'm always thinking, PLEASE DONT LET THIS HAPPEN!! I CANT PAY FOR IT!! haha..so funny.
I too am grateful for insurance. SUCH a blessing and much needed.
Aaron and I are going to the dentist in about two week for the first time in almost two years (for me) and like six years for Aaron thanks to Tbay..!!
I'd definitely like to learn more about secondary insurance. Steve and I are insured through my work, but his job doesn't offer benefits... anything extra definitely helps.
I am curious about the particular secondary insurance that you dad. I am a fan of secondary insurance, because I know it really helps. However, we haven't yet researched any particular sec. coverage out because we haven't yet needed it. But,I know we will want it when we get pregnant. If you know good/bad things about different insurance companies who offer secondary inusrance would be helpful. Then I don't have to do all the extra researching whent eh time comes...I know I can trust your opinion.
Isn't insurance great?! And the AFLAC plan is awesome. We have one too...but can't get pregnant. :( My husband sells those plans and so many people have made money from having a baby! Can you imagine??? Even if you don't make money it helps supplement your insurance so you don't have to pay as much. We got to use our AFLAC plan for a kidney stone surgery I had. It paid out almost $1000. I had gotten the plan thinking I would only use it when I had a baby. What a blessing!
