Just a few thoughts for today's Fitness Friday post. I found out this week that there are a few girls in my ward that run at 6:30 AM every morning. I've only been with them twice (I'm the only one with a little baby that still gets up at least once a night) so I've been a little slacking at that early hour, but it's made me realize how much nicer it is to run with friends. Don't get me wrong, running with Tru in the stroller is nice and all, but it doesn't compare to running with other girls. These girls are all moms, trying to stay in shape, get an early start on their day, taking some time for themselves. It's so refreshing.
It has made me think about the times in my life when my running has been the most consistent and the most successful. It's been when I've had a partner to go running with me, to push me, to cheer me on, to complain with!! I remember standing out at the SOE building in Hawaii waiting for Kjell to come around the corner on Temple street to start our run together (sorry Kjell that I wasn't the best running partner, but you really pushed me). And running with Kristi around the 3 mile loop in Laie, running that insane (what was it 10 miles?? or 8, I can't remember) distance up the east side of Oahu on Kam Highway that beautiful summer morning (or winter??? it's always summer in Hawaii). Going to Z's step aerobics class with JaiCi on Saturdays. Some of my dearest friendships have started with a common exercise goal.
Having a partner has always pushed me to:
1- Show Up!!!
2- Distract me from the aching legs and closing off throat
3- Make a new friend or strengthen an existing relationship
4- Accomplish something that I can feel good about
I'm going to keep running with this group of girls, mainly because I need it! I need to get back in shape, and I need to make some friends out here. I haven't been the most outgoing here in Nevada and I need to build some friendships since we will be here for a while and that will make life a lot more enjoyable.
So here is the challenge. I'm willing to bet that there is someone around you that has the desire to get healthy and work out, whether it be running, or going to the gym, walk with the kids around the neighborhood. Whatever it may be, find someone to enjoy it with you!! I believe that you attract other people to you that have the same interests and desires as you do.

Good times, i miss those days, getting up and meeting you at TVA to do our morning jog. I miss running outside, I haven't gotten brave enough to run the street of downtown before the sunrises, but I also highly dislike the still nasty, germ invested gym. Gyms are so boring, the same thing, the same people and germs all over. I need to find a running buddy, and a running area. COME VISIT US SOON. Actually maybe paul and I will be in vegas next weekend the 19th if you are in town.
I completely agree! I started running a couple years ago to get in better shape and it's all about having a partner. I didn't at first but now I do and it's amazing. She's a "real" runner but has had knee problems so my slow pace is ok for her. I had a hard time nursing and running because I wanted to eat all the time, way to go!
I totally miss our Aerobics Saturdays!! I have yet to find anyone here that is willing to get up early in the morning to work out with me. I can't wait to start my early morning jogs again - I think that I"m going to try to find a marathon to run in...or at least a half-marathon :)
Keep it up - you're my hero!!
